Dear Dillard Elementary Families:

I am most honored to be selected as your interim principal and am looking forward to getting to know the children, parents, and staff in the coming weeks.  For those of you who may not know me, I retired this past June after forty years as an educator, twenty-four of those years served here in Wake County.  I have been a teacher, assistant principal, central office curriculum director, and principal at both the elementary and middle school levels.   I am particularly excited about being in an elementary school again.

Though my time with you will be relatively brief, I am committed to providing you with continuity of your great program, stability, and support.  My focus will be on the best interests of the students.  You have a strong, competent, and dedicated staff.  Working together, I am confident that we will make this a terrific year for them.

I appreciate your patience as I learn your routines and thank you for welcoming me aboard.

Sincerely,

Anne Deegan

Pages from the Library News, Mrs. VanDeventer

This summer the library underwent a major transformation.  The changes continue, but are nearing completion.  Thanks to our parents, staff and administration that supported, consulted, shopped, sewed, painted, and left the mark of their various gifts upon this room of words.  Without you the transformation wouldn’t have been possible.

THANK YOU!

Thanks also to professional artists Kate Cook and Lori Shepley for our lifelike murals.  Our next project involves a wall painting near the stage.  The final project, coming later in the spring, involves the painting of a few clouds and some North Carolina birds flying on our ceiling.  If anyone has access to scaffolding and would be willing to let us use it for a week or so please contact me at kvandeventer@wcpss.net.  Parents are always welcome to visit the library to read or just enjoy the ambiance.

Our fall Book Fair cleared a record breaking $3,373.00 and grossed over $8,000.00!  All of which went to purchase books for the library.  Students turned in over 100 requests for various book titles, most of which were ordered.  Thanks to the PTA for their help and to the parents who worked at this crucial library fundraising event!  Records are made to be broken and hopefully that is just what will happen during the Book Fair in March.  Volunteers will be needed for this event including our Build-A-Book event on the evening of March 21st.

Thanks as well to the parents who continue to volunteer in the library.  There are always books in various states of cataloguing for those that find themselves with a bit of extra time.  Help is always appreciated.

Speaking of help, Emily Obriot-Hoch was recently hired as a 50% Media Specialist and will be with us Monday, Tuesday and every other Wednesday.  Emily and I both graduated with our Masters Degrees in Library Science in December.  Besides teaching, cataloguing and all the other library work, Emily will be doing what she loves best, matching students to books.

We continue to take donations of books in good shape for the library and classroom libraries.  A staff book

club is in the process of being organized.

A school that reads together succeeds together!

Candy-Grams, PTA

The PTA will be selling Candy-Grams again this year.  They will be 50 cents each.

We will sell them Thursday, Feb. 8th - Tuesday, Feb. 13th outside of the cafeteria during lunch.

The Candy-Grams will be delivered on Wednesday, Feb. 14th.

Outreach Opportunities, Miss Young & PTA

Last year our staff, students and parents raised money for the American Red Cross to help Hurricane Katrina victims. This year we hope to reach out to another very deserving non-profit organization called the Mabopane Foundation.

Started by the family of our very own kindergarten teacher Heather Young, Mabopane volunteers hold monthly yard sales to raise money for orphaned, abandoned and abused children in Mabopane, South Africa. The money goes towards food, school uniforms/fees, utility bills, and most recently towards building an orphanage that will house the children together. Check out www.mabopanekids.org for more information.

Please consider donating items for the March 10th yard sale. Donation boxes will be set up in Heather Young's classroom and outside the cafeteria+. If you have a large item, please call 326-2722 or email mabopanekids@nc.rr.com for delivery instructions. THANK YOU!

Reminder: Please do not bring in food from outside vendors as it competes with the cafeteria.*

Counselor’s Corner, Mrs. Poovey

The character trait for February is INTEGRITY.  All students will receive character trait lessons emphasizing the importance of honesty and being trustworthy at school and at home.  Please connect these lessons to home situations and encourage students to admit mistakes rather than lying.  Praise your child each time he or she makes the decision to tell the truth in a hard situation.

All fourth and fifth grade students will be participating in Career Day on February 9th.  Students will be completing activities focusing on careers in the days prior to the event.  Extend these activities at home by discussing your career with your child.  Help your student consider lots of different career possibilities at this stage of his/her life.  If you would like to volunteer for Career Day, please contact me at school or via email.

All second grade students are currently receiving lessons on decision-making as it relates to school and home situations, as well as future career decisions.  Upcoming lessons for students include career lessons in kindergarten classrooms and lessons focusing on good work habits in first-grade classrooms.  Have a great February!

Sincerely,

Angela Poovey

Jump Rope for Heart, Mrs. Burgess

To help celebrate February as “heart month” all physical education classes will be participating in a Jump Rope for Heart event to raise funds for the American Heart Association.

$5,340.59 was raised by Dillard Drive Elementary students last year.  Our goal for this year is $6,500!

Any contribution is greatly accepted.  Please look for contribution envelopes in weekly folders.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Cultural Arts, PTA

On February 6th at 2:00 p.m., Theatre IV will bring a musical performance of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad to our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. A big “thank you” goes to the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County for their financial support of this performance.

Poet, storyteller and author Allan Wolf is visiting our 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders on March 5th at 9:45 a.m. Check out his website http://allanwolf.com  for information about his books and school visits.

Writing News, Mrs. Minafo

What's Your Story? March 21, 2007

Each of our lives is a series of stories that come together to reflect who we are and what we hold dear.  From grocery lists to Pulitzer Prize winning novels, the written word is woven into the fabric of our lives- and our stories.  To honor writers young and old - past and present - we invite you to join us on March 21, 2007, for a schoolwide event that involves EVERY student and teacher at Dillard Drive Elementary.

The event, entitled, What's Your Story, will include displays, interactive presentations, student performances, and more.  The evening will feature efforts from each of our students and hold special meaning for visitors of all ages.  Please don't miss the chance to build family memories. Mark the date - and make attending a priority.

Though more details will be coming soon, you are invited to contact Kim Minafo if you can help out with this event, or need more information.(Contact Mrs. Minafo, Writing Coach, via email  kminafo@wcpss.net  or phone 919-858-1694.)

Congratulations to Christina Anderson in Mrs. Sherron’s class!  Her watercolor painting in the style of Claude Monet will represent Dillard Drive Elementary School at the 2007 "Gifts of Gold" exhibit.

It will be on display at Memorial Auditorium in conjunction with the "Pieces of Gold" performing arts extravaganza on March 6th and 7th.
