Cultural Arts Events:

  • February 6 at 2:00pm (grades 3-5): Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad musical performance by Theatre IV
  • March 5 at 9:45am (grades 2-4) Allan Wolf poetry and storytelling

Background:

Theatre IV, a nonprofit theatre now in its 31st touring season, produces a variety of entertaining and educational plays and musicals for students in grades K–12. Each production supports your teaching to the whole child while supporting the core curriculum and state’s standards. Theatre IV is America’s second largest professional touring theatre for young audiences and a proud recipient of the Sara Spencer Award for the “most outstanding contribution to children’s theater in the Southeastern United States.”

Your students will feel the exciting “here-and-now” experience of live theatre when Theatre IV takes the stage. The subjects of our plays spring to life in our lively retellings of classic tales or stirring re-enactments of events revolving around historic figures and their times. All plays are 45-55 minutes in length, self-contained and fully produced, with casts of 3-5 professional actors, imaginative sets, authentic costumes and props, and full sound systems. Study guide and a Q&A session included at no additional cost.

Allan Wolf, Author, Poet, Performer and Educator, writes poems in a variety of styles and for a variety of audiences. His poems for children are carefully crafted and full of wonder. His poems for young adults and grown-ups tackle more complex themes. Wolf’s unique performance style possesses the edgy intensity of a slam poet, the intellectual sensibility of an academic poet, the theatrical showmanship of an actor, the aw-shucks ease of an Appalachian storyteller, and the musicality drawn from his long tenure with The Dead Poets, the popular band that transforms classic poems into toe-tapping tunes. With nearly a thousand poems committed to memory, Wolf has deep pockets, allowing him to tailor his presentation for each individual audience. Family and educational shows contain participation and call & response.

Allan’s stage savvy is complemented by his experience and skill in the classroom. He works equally well with students, teachers and aspiring poets. Wolf has performed in schools throughout the US and regularly trains teachers on the use of poetry in the classroom. Wolf’s passion for words is contagious. The author of seven books, Allan’s writing has earned many honors including School Library Journal Best Book, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and an IRA Children’s Book Award Notable. His books of poetry have been selected by Scholastic Book Club, Scholastic Book Fair, and the Children’s Book of the Month Club. Wolf was also a finalist for the Southeastern Booksellers’ Association poetry award.
